You took the best possible route for your baby when you decided to make your own homemade baby food. Now that you have peeled, cut, cooked, processed or mashed and cooled your baby food, you probably have many questions about what to do with what you have made.

DO I HAVE TO ADD ANYTHING TO MY HOMEMADE BABY FOOD BEFORE I STORE IT?

-No, do not add any seasonings or anything else to your baby food before you store it.

WHEN I AM READY TO USE MY STORED HOMEMADE BABY FOOD, CAN I HEAT IT UP IN THE MICROWAVE?

-Yes. When warming up the foods, you can use the microwave or stove. Be careful when using the microwave. Because it doesn't warm the food evenly, some sections may be very hot while others are still cold. Always mix the food well and test it before giving it to your baby to eat.

CAN I STORE MY HOMEMADE BABY FOOD IN THE REFRIDGERATOR?

-Yes. Your homemade baby food can be stored in the refridgerator for a few days. However, dispose of any left-over portions that you have heated up for your baby and any unused baby food that has been stored in the refridgerator for five days.

HOW LONG CAN I STORE MY HOMEMADE BABY FOOD IN THE FREEZER?

-Homemade baby food can be stored in the freezer for up to six weeks. After this time, you should throw out the baby foods that have not been eaten.

HOW SHOULD I STORE LARGE PORTIONS OF MY HOMEMADE BABY FOOD IN THE FREEZER?

-There are many different ways to store homemade baby food in the freezer. If you plan on serving the same foods for a week at a time, you can store the baby foods in medium to large jars, similar to jelly jars. Do not fill them to the top, however, leave room for expansion. When you want to use the baby food, let the jar defrost in the refridgerator. DO NOT USE THE MICROWAVE TO DEFROST LARGE PORTIONS! The food that is heated up and not used will need to be thrown away.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO STORE MY HOMEMADE BABY FOOD IN THE FREEZER?

-The best practical way to store homemade baby food in the freezer is to use ice trays. Place small amounts of baby food into each section of an ice tray. Then cover with wrap and foil or use an ice tray that has a cover (Tupperware sells one). Then use can take however many small portions you need, heat them up and serve. There is no wasted baby food! You could also store the homemade baby food in small snack cups with covers that are freezer-safe. This will also eliminate wasted baby food.

Your baby's mealtime needs will constantly change while they are growing. As they start to eat more and more at each feeding, you will need to adjust how you store your baby food. A little more baby food will be needed and you can store your baby food gradually in larger containers as your baby progresses.
